CHAPTER 11

Both Okoye and Captain Aneka memorized the king’s schedule before arriving in New York City. There was no need for daily planners or reminders. The phones were only a formality so as to appear like the rest of the world: plugged in and logged on. So Okoye knows she has fifteen minutes to change out of her suit and into a dress for yet another formal event—this time a Broadway play.

A sinking feeling settles in her belly. Captain Aneka may have already checked her Kimoyo bead to see where she is. Okoye will have to tell the truth, and she will have to ask for help. She braces herself to lay out everything to her captain exactly how she had witnessed it. Whether or not it was wise to get the king involved would have to be up to both Okoye and Aneka. Okoye inhales as she gets closer to the elevators, summoning the bravery and integrity of the Dora Milaje to tell the truth.

The elaborate double doors to the elevator open to reveal none other than King T’Chaka. Okoye’s heart skips a beat. She holds her breath for a long second before saying, “My king. Good afternoon.”

King T’Chaka steps out of the elevator with Captain Aneka right behind him. “Good evening, Okoye.”

“Right. Evening.” Okoye glances at Aneka, who wears an apologetic look on her face.

“May I ask why my two guards were separated from each other?” King T’Chaka asks. “Captain Aneka greeted me outside my meeting with Stella unaccompanied by you, Okoye. What is the reason for this?”

Okoye drops her head, not out of guilt but out of respect for her king. And she cannot lie. “My king. I returned to Brownsville.”

King T’Chaka exhales, disappointment settling on his face. “You have not been communicating with me, Okoye. You did not use a Kimoyo bead or alert Captain Aneka of where you were going.”

“I apologize for my negligence, my king,” Okoye says.

“We don’t have time to sit and discuss. Let us walk and talk,” the king says.

Okoye, Aneka, and King T’Chaka leave the hotel and wait for their limo.

“So what is this obsession with Brownsville, eh, Okoye?” he continues.

“My king, if you had seen what I’ve seen, your heart would go out to the people of Brownsville, too,” Okoye says.

“Well, we have been there, and it seems as if Stella Adams will be cleaning up the mess that Lucinda Tate started. I saw it all in the slide presentation during today’s conference.”

The limo arrives and the driver comes around to open the rear door for them. He’s a short, stocky man who seems oblivious to who they are.

“No, there is more beneath the surface, King,” Okoye continues when they’re all seated inside the limo. “Stella Adams is not telling the truth. Lucinda Tate is trying to do her very best for the children of Brownsville, but there are more sinister, more powerful forces trying to stop her.”

“Okoye,” Aneka interrupts. “Why don’t you come out and
